Help with Spellings

Punctuation & Grammar
87% of my Year 1 pupils have been passing the Y1 Phonics Test
(National Average 78%)

Your questions:
  • Why does my child struggle to spell?
  • How can I effectively help my child to learn their spellings?
  • Does it matter that my child can't retain their spellings or apply them in their writing?
My reply:
  • I believe that children should be given a range of strategies to help them learn their spellings and not just given a list of words
  • English spellings are complicated due to the many alternative spellings of the same sound e.g. way, they, eight, train, great, acorn, made
  • Speaking, Phonics and Spellings are essential elements for Reading and Writing fluency.
Support I can offer you and your child:
  • An assessment and report that highlights their strengths and specific difficulties.
  • One-to-one tutoring.
  • A range of different strategies and games that will engage your child and help them to become more competent at spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Specific help for Y1 children working towards the Phonics Screening Test & for Year 6 children preparing for the SPAG test.
